Assalam Wa Alaikum! It's so nice to hear a sister talk about issues similar to what I am dealing with. I don't know any married muslimahs, so I have no one to discuss this topic with. I know I am reading this post very late, but I want to ask how things are going now, in regards to not wanting to listen to what you husband tells you to do. Let me tell you, this is the make-or-break topic in our marriage. This issue will break us....or make us (if I can get my act together!). I have an EXTREMELY hard time doing what he tells me to do...and I really want to break this habit. For example, he doesn't like when I wear certain clothes (like a maxi dresses, which kinda clings to the body when the wind blows), so he tells me to put something else on. He doesn't say it in a mean or degrading way. He just says it's too clingy and to find something else. Now I have NEVER had a man tell me what to wear, so I get a HUGE attitude when he doesn't like my outfit. He is not telling me anything bad, or something that goes against Islam (in fact he is giving me advice that benefits me), but I just can't take it. The world promotes being independent, not being submissive, not listening to your husband....and it is a horrible habit that I desperately want to break. Isn't it true that as long as your husband is not telling you to do anything that goes against the teachings of Islam, and tells you in a nice manner, then you must obey him? He can even tell his wife who she is allowed to be friends with. That is very hard for me to swallow. I want to be a good Muslim and a good wife, and I don't want my bratty little ego to keep me from pleasing my husband, and ultimately pleasing Allah (swt). If I had some female friends who are happily submissive to their husbands and can tell me that it's not the end of the world and to get over my ego, then I would feel so much better. I know that sounds horrible....I just like to feel related-to (if that makes any sense!). Anyways, sorry for writing so much. I love your youtube videos. Maybe you and your friend could make a video about the importance of listening to our husbands :)

I enjoy reading your blog posts--I would definitely read your novels! May Allah (SWT) bless you and assist you in becoming one of the best writers in our ummah, ameen. We need more writers for Islam! I am currently an undergraduate student--I wish to become a writer, too. Just be yourself when writing--your blog's engaging to read because of your use of words, and the way you narrate events in your life. Don't worry..I tend to neglect the grammatical rules. I think it's important for one to be passionate on what they write about. The basic grammatical rules would be sufficient. What makes a writer a good writer is their passion towards writing. The advantage Muslim writers have is that they're also passionate about Islam. :D So..if we were to write about Islam as well..then SubhanAllah!!!

Yay, mashallah, your blog is alive again! Ooooh well, I swear like a trooper as well although I hate myself for doing so. It's because my dad didn't treat me and my sis as daughters (read: princesses) but as sons, so it was easier to use the bad words. However, I try to avoid it by inventing neologisms (only German ones because I don't want to shock my relatives who are mainly Afghans with new words that aren't listed in a German dictionary), especially when Ramdan is coming. And by the way, Geez is one of my most used words when I'm annoyed by stupid people in the shopping mall or on tv. Inshallah we will fight this inner demon and find mental balance when everything around us sucks. ;-)

Ohh, I feel your pain! I love turkey though, although 19LB is a bit much! I did that for Thanksgiving for 5 people, and I had three days of leftovers!

I thought you weren't supposed to brine a frozen butterball turkey though, only fresh ones? When I googled before Thanksgiving (it was my first time cooking the turkey), it said that butterballs are prebrined and brining them would make them too salty! I might have to try brining next year if that isn't true! :)

I understand your struggle. I too have tried to clean up my language, not an easy task.

A little advice about waiting to have babies....as someone who waited (and is still waiting for the blessing) don't wait too long. I have researched quite a bit and it only gets harder to have children after the age of 30. IshaAllah you will have the blessing of children.

It's very sad that a good animal friend has left earth forever. I love dogs as well although they don't enjoy a good reputation in Islamic world, which is a shame. They are Allah's creatures.
